The Power to Change Hearts and Lives
For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart (Hebrews 4:12 KJV)
As the world becomes darker and darker before our eyes every day, the Lord will increase the grace to see greater manifestations of His glory in wisdom, power, and His presence. Our need for the express manifestation of God’s power is at its all-time high—because human problems and demonic activities are at an all-time high.
As described previously, God’s power operates in our lives in three principal spheres: the new birth, the transformation of people’s hearts to produce transformed lives, and then miracles. Although we need all of these manifestations, the Church and the world urgently need the power to transform hearts and create true changes in our minds, emotions, desires, decisions, character, and personality. What do we do when we just do not desire the things of God, struggle with lusts, battle depression or bitterness, etc.? Or what about believers living in sin, who want to be free, but just do not seem to find the power to break free? Is a true transformation of our hearts a reality, or are we in a hopeless battle to struggle until death?
As described in the Deshen Daily devotional mentioned above, the greatest miracle in a human being’s life is not a financial breakthrough, healing of their bodies, etc. This sphere of manifestation of God’s power in miracles is still crucial to meet the needs of God’s people in this area. However, the greatest work of the power of the Holy Spirit is the transformation of a person’s heart, first from a sinner to a saint( the new birth). This first great work is then followed by the progressive change of their hearts reflected in their outward character and behavior. This is the Father’s utmost desire and will, yet it is not a very popular path amongst us His people.
It takes power to change our human condition, whether our hearts or bodies. And the power to change the human heart is the Word of God. It is living, powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, and it will break the addiction, deliver us from that sinful behavior, wash those filthy immoral thoughts or lusts from our hearts, and make us willing to obey God, etc.
If there were a medication that could cure juvenile delinquency or wickedness in the hearts of criminals, governments would pay billions of dollars to pharmaceutical companies to empty their jails. If there were a medication that would remove lust from the hearts of husbands, wives would empty their saving accounts to purchase every pill available. Similarly, if there was a pill that could cure bitterness in our hearts, end pornography, make children obedient to parents, or fix any other manifestation of the wickedness of the fallen human heart, that pill will sell for billions of dollars. As we all know, there is no such pill. Besides, Man is both spirit and flesh in one, and the problems of the human heart are beyond what medications can handle. There is nothing on earth that can change our hearts as the Word of God. It is God’s power to save the lost and transform the saved.
Jesus is coming for a bride without wrinkles or spots—a people holy in body and heart. However, it will take the mighty power of the Spirit operating through the Word to fulfill this divine will in these days of escalating evil, sinfulness, and moral decay. The Church will not only survive, but it will thrive because Jesus said, “I will build My Church”—you can be sure He will succeed in what He has set out to do!
What are the three spheres of operation of God’s power in our lives?
True transformation of our hearts is possible. However, it does not come by our wishes or desire. It takes the power of the Holy Spirit; it is indeed not by might nor by power but by His Spirit. Allow the Holy Spirit to complete the work the Father has sent Him to do in your life!
Ask the Father to help us tap into the power of the Word to ignite spiritual transformation.
