How to Grow in Grace
But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen. (2 Peter 3:18 KJV)
We can grow in grace—increase God’s grace in our lives. Since we know that grace is unmerited, this instruction might be a little confusing to some. So, we will briefly review what it means to grow in grace and how we can facilitate that growth.
The term “grace” in the New Testament has various shades of meaning. Consequently, whenever we find this term, it is paramount that we know exactly what God calls “grace” in that specific passage. For instance, in 2 Peter 3:18, the term grace is not the unmerited favor of God that saves us; we cannot grow or increase that grace in our lives.
On the contrary, in our main passage above, grace is the tangible experience or expression of God’s power at work in our lives. For example, the gift of prophecy is grace, just as the victory over sin, joy unspeakable and full of glory, or the cheerful attitude of giving (2 Corinthians 8:7). We can grow in each of these character qualities or gifts.
Peter further clearly stated how we grow in grace in the first chapter of this epistle:
“Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,” (2 Peter 1:2 KJV).
As your knowledge (epignosis) and revelation of Jesus increase, grace increases in your life and ministry.
Of course, the rest of the New Testament shows us other things we can do to grow in grace, but in 2 Peter 3:18, Peter had knowledge in mind.
So, I encourage you to grow in God’s grace in your spiritual life, ministry, family, finances, health, etc.
