Why Is Satan Called the God of This World?
“In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not.” (2 Corinthians 4:4, KJV)

The title “god of this world” given to Satan is quite intriguing. One reason it can be difficult to understand is that it appears only once in Scripture. When this happens, we apply sound Bible interpretation principles to discern what Paul meant by calling Satan “the god of this world.” in 2 Corinthians 4:4)
We begin by examining the term and its context. Traditionally, a “god” is a supernatural being who is worshipped and holds influence over people’s lives. Two key characteristics stand out: worship and power. Both apply to Satan, but in this context, Paul emphasizes Satan’s authority and powerful influence over the world.
The term “world,” or more accurately, “age” (the Greek reads “god of this age”), refers to the present evil system marked by sin and rebellion against God. It includes people, systems, and values opposed to God, and it is ruled or heavily influenced by Satan.
What’s most unsettling is how Satan operates as “god of this world.” He doesn’t demand open worship like Nebuchadnezzar. Nor does he wreak havoc like mythological gods in movies. Instead, he blinds minds—especially those who do not believe. He influences thoughts, understanding, and perceptions, leading people to reject Christ. He causes them to evaluate the Gospel, dismiss its logic, and reject its truth—often based on seemingly “reasonable,” but ultimately flawed arguments. This mental manipulation is a primary reason Paul gives Satan this title. It is a powerful, pervasive influence over human reasoning.
Other Scriptures affirm Satan’s rule over the world. Jesus called him the “prince of this world” (John 12:31). Paul described him as the “prince of the power of the air” (Ephesians 2:2). In Ephesians 6:12, Paul also identifies demonic rulers as “the rulers of the darkness of this world.” That darkness includes sin, evil, suffering, and all forms of wickedness. Scripture confirms that demonic powers govern this dark system. It’s a sobering reality.
But here is the good news:
“Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.” (Luke 10:19, KJV)
Yes, Satan has influence over this world—but God has given us authority to overcome him wherever we encounter his works: in our lives, homes, neighborhoods, and even nations. We are called to dismantle Satan’s dominion and advance the kingdom of God.
Meditate
What does the term “god of this world” mean to you personally? Does the world worship Satan—either knowingly or unknowingly? What does Scripture say?
Apply the Word
There is a god who governs the world system, but the God of heaven has made us His kings and ambassadors to bring that false god under our feet. Dethrone him in your life, and bring your world back under the lordship of the one true God.
Pray
Ask the Father to open your understanding to this truth—and give you the faith to walk in your authority and enforce it in every area of your life.
