He Sent His Word and Healed Them
He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions (Ps. 107:20 KJV)

What does it mean that God sent His word?
To fully understand this passage, we must first explore its context. Then, we will closely examine the meaning of the terms sent and word, and most importantly, consider how this applies to us today.
Psalm 107 is a psalm of thanksgiving, recounting God’s deliverance of His people from various trials—wandering in the wilderness, imprisonment, sickness, and storms. These afflictions often resulted from their disobedience and turning away from God. However, in their distress, they cried out to Him, and He sent His word to heal and deliver them.
But how did God send His word to them? While the passage does not specify the exact means, the Bible provides insight into how God delivered His people. In the Old Testament, sending His word often implies issuing an authoritative command to bring about a specific result. Many times, He sent His prophets with a message that brought healing and deliverance. Think of how He used the judges to bring deliverance to Israel.
Now, let us closely examine the term sent. In Hebrew, it means to send forth, dispatch, or stretch out. These words describe sending a person to accomplish a task. Unlike all creation, God’s Word is a self-expression of His being. When He speaks, He is essentially going out to accomplish what He has spoken. Thus, whenever God speaks, He sends His word.
God’s word is not merely an expression of His mind and wisdom; it also represents His power—often referred to as His hand—to accomplish His will. If God desires to heal or deliver someone, He speaks to them. As Hebrews 1:1 tells us, His word came to the Israelites in various ways.
However, something dramatic happened that redefined the meaning of this passage. God’s Word no longer came in different forms as in the Old Testament but as a person—Jesus. Please grasp this: Jesus is God’s Word sent forth to heal and deliver us.
Jesus affirmed this in John 8:42:
“Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me.”
Notice the striking similarity with Isaiah 55:11, which declares:
“So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth.”
Jesus is the fulfillment of Psalm 107:20—God sent His Word to heal and deliver.
What Does This Mean for You?
First, Jesus is here. God has already dispatched His Word to ensure your healing and deliverance. Today, Jesus dwells in your heart, and He has left His Word with you in the Bible. Here is God’s promise to you: He has already sent His Word to heal and deliver you from all your distresses.
The Israelites only experienced a taste of this, but as a believer in Christ today, you are blessed with the fullness and fulfillment of this prophetic word.
