What thing is this?
And they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned among themselves, saying, What thing is this? what new doctrine is this? for with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him (Mark 1:27 KJV)
When Jesus starting preaching, the Jews who heard Him immediately acknowledged that something was different about His teaching. For centuries, they have listened to Jewish Rabbis teach the Law every Sabbath but said Jesus was not like one of their scribes. When Jesus taught, He spoke to demons with power, and they obeyed. The people exclaimed, “what thing in this? What new doctrine is this?
Jesus taught with wisdom that blew everyone away. However, He said the miracles He performed were the signs that proved who He was, not just His teaching. If Jesus and the Apostles needed the power of God in display to draw people’s attention to soften their hearts to believe God, then we certainly need the same. Christianity without God’s power does not differ from any other religion.
The power of God has its place in the Body of Christ. It is God’s tool for drawing the lost to Him. I call it the divine apologetic tool. The teaching that miracles passed away with the Apostles weakens the Church’s mission to evangelize the lost. God’s power has one ultimate purpose in our lives: prove to people that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God.

What was the single tool Jesus gave His disciples to win the world from Acts 1:8?
Acts 1:8 remains the critical verse for the Church’s mission to win the world. The unsaved do not need more scientific evidence to prove the accuracy of the Bible. There is sufficient evidence of God for anyone with eyes to see. However, it takes the power of God to make them see these proofs. When the lost see the power of God and start asking, “what thing is this?” their hearts open up to believe in the God they cannot see. May the Lord bring us back to embrace the critical role of His power in our lives.
