The Two Perceptive Arms of the Prophetic
Moreover the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, Jeremiah, what seest thou? And I said, I see a rod of an almond tree” (Jeremiah 1:11, KJV)
As children of God, we are part of a prophetic Body, called to understand and engage with the prophetic nature of our walk with the Lord. In this devotional, we will explore how God reveals His will to us through the two perceptive arms of the prophetic: the eyes and the ears.
Previously, we examined how the prophetic operates through two dimensions—knowledge and utterance. It begins with knowing God’s will (the perceptive) and subsequently proclaiming it (the expressive). Now, let’s focus on the perceptive aspect and how it operates through the eyes and the ears.
Throughout the Bible, we find examples of prophets perceiving God’s Word through visions or dreams, like Daniel’s vision of the four beasts (Daniel 7:1-14), or through hearing God’s audible voice, such as young Samuel in the Temple (1 Samuel 3:1-10). These experiences demonstrate the two perceptive arms of the prophetic, enabling prophets to see or hear God’s will.
To walk in the prophetic, we must develop spiritual sight and hearing. This means sharpening our spiritual eyes and ears to be open to God’s revelations. God may choose to speak to us in various ways. For instance, we might receive a vision like Zechariah’s vision of the golden lampstand (Zechariah 4:1-14), or we might “hear” an image in our minds.
As believers, it’s crucial to nurture our spiritual senses. By doing so, we accept our prophetic nature and strengthen ourselves with God’s Spirit and Word.
