But the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn, which shines brighter and brighter until full day. (Proverbs 4:18 ESV)
What a description of our lives in Christ! When the scriptures speak of the righteous in verses such as these, it will refer to those who are the righteousness of God in Christ in the New Testament context. That is, as a believer, you are the righteous in Christ. Let us now review the key words “path”, “light of dawn” and “brighter and brighter until full day”.
The word “path” here is used figuratively to describe your way or manner of life. It is the totality of your existence here and now, and how you live your life on a daily basis. Yes, you are the righteous in Christ but there is a practical path of righteousness to walk on. Your path encompasses your whole being, your total health and character. Note the verse did not say the righteous shines brighter and brighter. It says the path of the righteous shines brighter and brighter!
Light in this context demonstrates your works or as noted above, the expressions of your character. It describes the divine qualities that are being expressed in your life, such as love, peace, joy, wisdom, power, etc. Your light at any point in time is the degree to which these divine splendors are an expression in you. The scripture above says your path shines brighter and brighter, meaning as you grow and mature in the faith, your life expresses more and more of divine love, joy, wisdom, righteousness, power, etc. The full day is the full blown Christ-like life!
Take a moment to ponder on our main verse above and mutter those words again and again to yourself.
