Money and the Gift of Enjoyment: Unlocking God’s Distinction Between Wealth and Fulfillment

Also, every man to whom God has given riches and possessions, and the power to enjoy them and to accept his appointed lot and to rejoice in his toil—this is the gift of God [to him]. (Ecclesiastes 5:19, AMPC)

Imagine possessing riches beyond measure, yet feeling like a stranger is living your dream—how could this happen? Scripture draws a striking distinction between wealth and the ability to enjoy it. These are not automatically linked, as Ecclesiastes 6:2 warns: a person may have riches, possessions, and honor but lack the God-given ability to find joy in them. What a profound insight into the human condition!

Wealth, in and of itself, is neither evil nor inherently satisfying. It is a tool, a resource that can be used for good or squandered. However, joy and contentment stem not from the wealth itself but from God’s grace. This distinction reveals two important truths.

First, wealth alone cannot satisfy the soul. The Preacher in Ecclesiastes calls it “vanity”—a fleeting, empty pursuit if unaccompanied by God’s blessing. Many wealthy individuals find themselves discontent, envying the simpler lives of others. Without God, wealth can even become a source of torment rather than delight. In fact, Solomon describes the condition of having wealth without enjoyment as an “evil disease” or “sore affliction” (Ecclesiastes 6:2).

Second, the ability to enjoy wealth is a divine gift. This includes the capacity to be grateful, content, and fulfilled with one’s blessings. It is a mindset that recognizes God as the ultimate source of every good thing. The “power to enjoy” transforms wealth from a burden into a blessing. This aligns with the principle in Proverbs 10:22: “The blessing of the Lord, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it.” True wealth from God includes both provision and peace.

What does this mean for us today? It challenges us to seek not material abundance but God’s wisdom and favor. Only through a relationship with Him can we gain the right perspective, learning to be content in every circumstance (Philippians 4:11-13). Paul aptly reminds us that “godliness with contentment is great gain” (1 Timothy 6:6).

Whether rich or poor, the true treasure lies in walking with God. He shapes our hearts to embrace gratitude, stewardship, and the joy that only His presence provides. Wealth without God is empty, but with Him, even the simplest blessings become rich in meaning and fulfillment.
