He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness. (2 Corinthians 9:10 ESV)

Welcome to Day 3 of Deshen Daily miniseries on financial prosperity. In our society today, money and material things are synonymous, though they are not exactly the same. I might sometimes use money but the overall reference is to material things in general.

Yesterday, we discussed the critical truth that God Himself tells us, He knows we need material things. Let us take this truth one step further to discuss the purpose of money or material things from God’s perspective. Why does God give us material things?

Paul gave us the two arms of the purpose of money in our lives. God gives us seed to sow and bread to eat. A seed is what you give away, while bread is what you eat to meet your needs. He puts the seed first. This first purpose is the spiritual purpose of money. Yes, you read that well. Money has a spiritual purpose. God wants you to be materially rich so that you can be spiritually rich in good works before Him (1 Timothy 6:17–18 ESV). When you use your material resources to meet the needs of people, you are laying up spiritual treasure in heaven.

The second purpose of money is that it serves to meet our own needs. God puts this second in the verse. He gives us money to meet our material needs. The money you have should be used to meet the needs of others around you and also to meet your needs. The Lord gives you wisdom to know which is which, so that you do not eat your seed or sow your bread.

What are the two broad categories of the purpose of money that the Lord gives us?

APPLY THE WORD

Is the money you have, no matter how much, doing what God wants it to do? Do not wait to be a billionaire to put this to work. In God’s perspective, if you cannot manage $10 correctly, you will not be able to manage $1 million dollars, so He will not give it to you. Steward the money God gives you.

PRAY

mAsk the Father for the wisdom to correctly manage the money you have in your hands.
