All Scripture is Given by Inspiration of God
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness (2 Timothy 3:16, KJV).
One unshakeable truth in Christianity is that the Bible is God’s Word. Each scripture is inspired by God, but what does this mean?
It’s important to note that we’re discussing the scriptures — the written words of the Bible — not just the concept of God’s Word. God did not physically write the words of the Bible; every passage from Genesis to Revelation was written by people, often without realizing their words would become scripture. Consider Paul writing 2 Timothy to his spiritual son, Timothy. He wrote this letter much like one might write to a friend, unaware that his words were not merely an ordinary letter but divinely inspired.
Though people wrote the Bible, God inspired every word in it. The term “inspired” means “God-breathed.” Literally, it refers to the air physically expelled out of God’s lungs, but its use in 2 Timothy 3:16 is, of course, figurative. “God-breathed” means that God, through His Breath—the Holy Spirit—moved the authors (2 Peter 1:21), granting them the knowledge and utterance to write (1 Corinthians 1:5). Thus, the words the Biblical authors wrote were a product of the Holy Spirit working through human vessels, using their minds and hands. It’s crucial to note that inspiration does not mean these authors sat at their desks hearing God’s voice dictating the words for them to write. Instead, besides authors like Moses, who heard God audibly giving Him the Laws, God often used their spiritual experiences, understanding, skills, and circumstances to communicate His words.
This understanding implies that God’s Breath is within the scriptures. Despite being static words on paper, these scriptures spring to life when understood and believed by a human heart. With this realization, your perception of the Bible may forever change. When you read, understand, and believe the scriptures, God breathes life over you.
Meditation
Reflect on the words of 2 Timothy 3:16 once more.
Apply the Word
We should all ensure this truth is not taken for granted—do you really believe the Bible is God’s word, the same words spoken to create the world in Genesis 1? Please ensure you understand and believe the truth above.
Pray
Ask the Spirit of the Word to help you receive the Bible as His words.
