Why is fear so powerful?

“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind” (2 Tim. 1:7 KJV).

Almost every one of us has experienced fear. There are some whose lives are crippled by it daily. Fear has been a faithful companion of human beings since sin entered into the world through Adam. Man became afraid: of God’s judgment of sin, of other men’s wicked intentions and devices against him, of the harshness of the environment, of what the future might hold, etc.

The scripture above uses an important phrase to describe fear. It calls it “the spirit of fear.” This does not mean that fear is a spirit being or a demonic spirit. It means fear is a spiritual influence that takes over the soul. It is an invisible power, a controlling force that dominates the emotions. Fear is a spirit, meaning it carries with it the attributes of the spirit realm, just as faith is not a natural feeling in the heart of man. Faith in God’s presence is the antidote to fear. If you want to live happily and be successful on this earth, you must subjugate fear by every means.

MEDITATE

In the scripture above, what did God give us instead of fear? Declare to yourself that “God has not given to me the spirit of fear.”

APPLY THE WORD!

It is almost a guarantee that something will happen today that will trigger fear in you. When that happens, remember that God is with you and then rebuke that spirit of fear by declaring the words of the verse above. Because fear is a spirit, it responds to words! This is how to begin the process of ridding your heart of this tormenting spirit of fear.

PRAY

Ask the Father to help you eradicate fear from your life and establish power, love, and a sound mind.
