And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful (Colossians 3:15 KJV)
The peace of God in the heart of the believer can serve as an umpire that the Lord uses to guide us in certain aspects of our lives. Have you ever wanted to do something and you “just did not feel right about it”? Your human spirit is now born again and is sensitive to the ways of God. When you are on the right path, God’s peace brings a reassurance in your heart. When you are on stepping on the wrong path, you will not have the peace of the Lord in the path you are moving in and you can sense that something is wrong. The peace of God is, therefore, an inner guide that can be used to help us in decisions that we make.
The Amplified Bible indeed amplifies and makes the meaning of this verse stand out:
“And let the peace (soul harmony which comes) from Christ rule (act as umpire continually) in your hearts [deciding and settling with finality all questions that arise in your minds, in that peaceful state] to which as [members of Christ’s] one body you were also called [to live]. And be thankful (appreciative), [giving praise to God always]” (Colossians 3:15, AMP).
Just as the conscience can be seared with a hot iron( 1 Tim. 4:2) to make it so insensitive and hardened to error or sin, so this inner peace of God can be suppressed if we persistently fail to recognize or respond appropriately. It is a guide, and we can grow in our ability to put it to work in our lives. This is not the only way the Lord leads or speaks to us but we should be sensitive to recognize Him when He is wanting to catch our attention using the peace in our hearts.
Declare that the “peace of God is ruling in my heart through the power of the Holy Spirit.”
APPLY THE WORD
I want you to pay more attention to God’s peace in your heart as you make decisions. This a spiritual aptitude you can cultivate in your life. Recognize and respond to the peace of God. Remember always to ask the Lord to clarify anything to you and trust He will. Our God is amazing. We just neglect to ask Him many times to tell us if He was the One speaking to us or not. Learn to talk to the Holy Spirit. When you do not have any peace in your heart about anything, simply ask “ Lord, is this You trying to guide me?”. He will respond.
Thank the Lord for the gift of His peace in our spirits.
