The Rain of Sound Teaching
May my teaching drop as the rain, my speech distill as the dew, like gentle rain upon the tender grass, and like showers upon the herb. (Deuteronomy 32:2, ESV)
Moses spoke these words in Deuteronomy 32:2 after rehearsing the Law to the Jews before they entered the promised land. He saw his teachings as rain and dew falling on tender grass and herbs. What fascinating imagery!
In Scripture, rain, dew, and showers often refer to water from heaven that nourishes plants. When rain is withheld, famine results, but there is a great harvest in abundance. We are the plants, and the water from heaven pictures God’s influence on our lives.
Scripture presents three major ways God comes down to us as water from heaven: the Spirit, the Word, and the blessing. While we are familiar with the idea of the Spirit being poured from on high and the blessing as showers, we may not realize the Word of God is like rain that falls upon us to make us flourish.
Good teaching and the sound revelation of the Word of God constitute rain upon Christians. They make them bud, bear fruit and flourish. For instance, as you read, understand, and believe the teaching of this devotional, you soak in God’s rain: your life is like the tender grass or herb, and the teaching is the rain.
There the pure and sound teaching of God’s word is crucial for a healthy, victorious spiritual life. May the Lord send pastors and ministers after His heart who will feed His people with the uncorrupted and pure knowledge of His Word (Jeremiah 3:15).
Meditate
Ponder Deuteronomy 32:2. Picture your life as tender grass under the rain of the Word.
Apply the Word
Those wet and dripping with God’s rain have storehouses full of harvests. In contrast, dry clothes produce empty lives. Soak yourself in the sound, uncorrupted teaching of the Word; do not only rely on others but learn to get into the Bible yourself and make its rain fall on you.
Pray
Ask the Spirit to help you soak in the knowledge of His Word.
