How God Opened Lydia’s Heart
And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple from the city of Thyatira, who worshipped God, heard us. The Lord opened her heart, and she attended to the things spoken by Paul. (Acts 16:14 KJV)
Our heart’s condition determines our interactions with the spirit realm, especially with God. When open to God, your life fills with His presence and power. Let’s examine how God opened the heart of a woman Paul met, Lydia.
While in Thyatira, Paul preached to women praying by the riverside. Among them was Lydia, a powerful businesswoman. Paul explains that the Lord opened her heart as she listened to his words. But how did God achieve this?
The verse shows that when God opened her heart, Lydia focused on Paul’s words and believed in Christ. Following this, not only did she get baptized, but her entire family did too. God opened her heart by helping her attend to Paul’s words, understand them, and accept them as truth. As the Lord opened Lydia’s heart, He opened ours on the day we accepted Christ. Truly, no one can believe that Jesus is the Lord except God opened their hearts to accept this truth( 1 Corinthians 12:3).
Here are two powerful truths: our hearts can be open or closed to God, and the Lord can open our hearts. A closed heart cuts us off people from God’s life (Ephesians 4:18), leaving Christ outside, knocking (Revelation 3:20). Thankfully, God can open our hearts, as He did at salvation (1 Corinthians 12:3). He continues to do so today through His Word and Spirit. We can pray and ask the Lord to make our hearts tender towards Him, to give us understanding or help us believe His Word (Ephesians 1:15-18, 1 Corinthians 12:8). Furthermore, His Word is water from heaven that softens our hearts, changing them from hardened rocks to soft fertile grounds ( Psalms 65:10).
