Your Heart is a Large Room: What is inside that Room?

But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart. (Luke 2:19 KJV)

When Mary heard the things spoken about her son, Jesus, scripture says she kept those things in her heart. Did you notice that? She kept things in her heart—her heart was a storage room. And Proverbs 4:23 implicitly tells us you can look at what is in your heart and tell what your life is or will become!

The human heart is our inner life. Constitutionally, it is made up of the spirit and the soul. Functionally, it consists of our thoughts, emotions, and will. When Mary heard the declarations about Jesus, she kept those words, the information, in her mind. So words with the knowledge they bring can be stored in our hearts.

Beyond words and information, our hearts can also contain things. E.g. when you are joyful, your heart has joy stored inside one of its many rooms. Conversely, when we are anxious or fearful, our hearts also contain something—anxiety and fear. The same is true for lust, pornography, sin, etc. Our hearts can contain good things such as joy, peace, love, or sinful things.

Things get more complicated and fascinating as we proceed further. Not only can our hearts store words or things, but they can also keep persons or people! You might not have noticed it, but you can carry someone in your heart, for better or worse. In Philippians 1:7, Paul told the Philippians he had them in his heart. When we are angry or bitter with someone, we also carry that person in our hearts. Remember, our heart is the spiritual side of our being and functions spiritually.

What or who is in your heart? Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will enjoy the sweetness and the glory of God’s communing presence!
