Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife (Matt. 1:24 KJV)

Did you realize that the scriptures have no recording of anything that Joseph, Mary’s husband, said? He is a prominent figure in the Christmas story but he just never said a word that the Lord recorded for us. Well, he was not dumb. He certainly communicated extensively. You can be sure he said a few nice words to woo Mary into accepting him! However, though Joseph was speechless in the scriptures, he preached great sermons for us through his actions.

The scripture above gives us one of his recorded “sermons.” He exemplified obedience and surrender to the Lord. Could you imagine a young man getting the news that his beautiful teenage wife-to-be is pregnant? Nothing fires up the jealousy in a man as the thought of another man temperating with his girl. When God spoke to him through the angel, he responded in obedience without any questions.

Verse 25 of our chapter above gives us another related speechless sermon that brother Joseph preached. The scriptures say “And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS” (Matt. 1:25 KJV). Joseph took Mary as his wife, lived with her in the same house but did not go to bed with her until he delivered her baby. Talk about self-control! His sermons continue in the scriptures.
