Darkness Shall Cover the Earth • Deshen Daily

For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the Lord shall arise upon thee, and His glory shall be seen upon thee.” (Isaiah 60:2, KJV)

A few years ago, the Lord began showing me from the scriptures how darkness will cover the earth. I knew, therefore, that things would get worse, but I did not expect it to happen this quickly. However, He gives us an exciting hope.

The Prophet Isaiah spoke so accurately under the Spirit about what is happening in our days. He described two powerful trends: gross darkness covering the earth and people while the great light of God’s glory is shining. What is this darkness?

To fully understand this, there are three precedents in scripture against which this verse is spoken.

Firstly, darkness is used metaphorically here. God uses physical darkness, which we are all familiar with, to explain a spiritual reality. When God says darkness is covering the earth, He is not referring to a lack of electricity or power outages. Ironically, today’s earth has more light and luminosity than in prior years.

Secondly, we find this darkness and light duo first mentioned in Genesis 1:2-3, where darkness covered the earth, and the light of God’s Word dispelled the darkness.

Thirdly, we see the same duo mentioned by Isaiah about Jesus:

“The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.” (Isaiah 9:2, KJV)

In these passages, people in spiritual darkness are delivered by God’s Light, His Word.

This spiritual darkness refers to the experience of sin, evil, and demonic activity with their associated grief and untold human suffering. Key terms to note are sin, demons, evil, and human misery. It is crucial to understand that Satan and demons are the spiritual intelligence driving the darkness. That is why scripture calls them the kingdom of darkness.

As believers, having the right perspective on what is happening in the world is crucial. We are not merely dealing with geopolitical conflicts, financial meltdowns, or moral decadence; we are facing an unprecedented escalation of demonic activity.

But here is the good news: believers will experience God’s presence and power these days like no generation has ever experienced! That is the light, His glory, revealed in His Word.

So be of good cheer because Jesus has overcome the world. Expect to see glorious things in your life as God’s light shines brighter amid the darkness.
