Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron

Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; Thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel (Psalm 2:9 KJV)

break them with a rod of iron showing a broken glass cup

The Father gave His Son, who was coming to be the King of kings, the promise in the verse above concerning His enemies. He says the Son will break them with a rod of iron and dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel. The figure used here is someone with an iron rod in their hands and smashing to piece a clay vessel like a plate or cup. Imagine such a scene.

In this imagery, the clay vessel represents the enemies of Christ. This includes the spiritual powers and human systems in place that are against Christ. It might appear the Church of God is vulnerable and powerless before the world’s systems that toss the Church around as they wish. However, the Church is indestructible. Even more captivating is what the verse above is saying. The rod in the Son’s hand represents authority and power to subject the world’s opposition and resistance.

The imagery of dashing the vessel to pieces is that of complete and absolute victory. The clay vessel is no match for an iron rod. God has bestowed great power and authority upon the Church. The world has not yet seen the fullness of this authority in display. However, the Church is slowly but surely maturing and getting ready.

MEDITATE

Think about the imagery of the iron rod and clay vessel above. Think of what the rod and vessel represent. I now want you to think of that rod in your hand and what that means.

APPLY THE WORD

Jesus will not dash the vessel to pieces as Jesus the Man. He will do so as Jesus the Church! That means it will be you and me that will crush the enemy with irresistible power and authority. This is the kingdom of God! This is God’s plan for your life. Get yourself mature yourself into it!

PRAY

Thank the LORD for such authority given to us.
