And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels…. (1 Timothy 3:16, KJV)

God is spirit, and is therefore not visible to the human eyes. The Apostle Paul says in the first Chapter of the same book  “now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God..”(1 Timothy 1:17, KJV). He states explicitly that God is invisible. However, you will remember multiple instances in the Old Testament when the scriptures record examples of  God appearing to His people.   Is there a contradiction? No! The mystery lies in the nature and revelations of God.

God created everything that is in existence, spirit and physical. He created the angels and the spirit world. That means He is not in the same class as the angels. They are all spirits, but He is  Creator.  What this means is that God has to step into the spirit world He created to interact with the angels. For humanity to experience or see  God, He has to step even lower into the physical realm. God has a way of stepping into the physical world and becoming visible to humans in some form or manifestation such as  a cloud, voice, fire, human figure or even as a human being as He did to Abraham. This is what the saints SAW, God manifesting Himself to become visible to the human senses in some way.   Theologians call this “theophanies,” or appearances of God.

The height of the manifestation of God in the natural world for humans is Jesus. When Jesus was conceived, God Himself, the invisible Creator, who had previously only manifested Himself in some form in the natural world, became a Human Being. When  He was born, it was a historic day for all eternity. God became visible to the physical senses entirely as a Man. He was not appearing in the form of a Man as in the Old Testament. He began a Man—was born, lived, died and resurrected. God became manifested in the flesh. When the people saw Jesus, little did they know that their physical eyes were seeing the most glorious and fantastic miracle that has and will ever take place – God manifested in the flesh. The wonders of the Person of our Savior and Lord Jesus Christ!

Do angels know everything about God? Do all of them “see the face of God”? ( Ephesians. 3:10)

APPLY THE WORD

God has been revealed entirely and entirely to humanity in the Person of Jesus Christ. He wants us to know Him. Our natural minds can only handle so much, and we will fully know Him in our glorious state when Jesus returns. However, His Word in your hand is the spiritual aspect of the physical Jesus that the people saw! You can see Jesus in the Word better than your physical eyes can ever see and know Him! Keep feeding on the Word and growing in your knowledge of Him.

PRAY

Ask the Lord to give you the spirit of wisdom and revelation to see and know Him fully.
