There is a spiritual sacrifice in your mouth
Through Him then, let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that give thanks to His name. (Heb. 13:15 NAS)
We learn from the Old Testament that sacrifices and offerings can be well pleasant and delightful to the Lord. However, these sacrifices which were of sheep, goats and even plant products, which were only a shadow of the “real thing”, that is the truth, to come. Hebrews 10:1 records “for the Law, since it has only a shadow of the good things to come and not the very form of things”. True worship does not deal with the shadow but the “very form” or the “real thing”.
Spiritual sacrifices are the “real thing” that those ceremonial sacrifices of the old testament were signifying. One such sacrifice which we have to offer to God for a pleasant offering is our praise. Praise is a spiritual sacrifice, the “real thing” that God wants. In the Old Testament, the sacrifices were sheep, goats, cattle, etc. Today, those sheep, goats, and cattle are now in our mouth! The words of our mouths are the spiritual sacrifices which do the “real thing” that goats and sheep were foreshadowing in the Old Testament. Hebrews 13:15 above is a direct quotation of Hosea 14:2 which says “take with you words, and turn to the LORD: say unto him, Take away all iniquity, and receive us graciously: so will we render the calves of our lips (KJV).Your words are important to God. Take them to the Lord in praise! The King James Version calls it the “calves of our lips”, that is the “sheep or goats” from our lips! There is a sacrifice in your lips. Offer it to God continually!
