He has put eternity into man’s heart
He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man’s heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end. (Ecclesiastes 3:11 ESV)
God has put eternity in the hearts of men. The Hebrew word “olam” translated eternity here means time as a continuum of experiences without beginning in the past or end in the future. This eternity in the hearts of human beings is the reason why material things alone will never be enough. Every effort to erase spirituality or religion from human society has been futile and will always be futile.
God has placed a stamp of the spiritual world in the hearts of people. We are truly grateful for the material and scientific advances of modern civilization. It would appear the more advanced we become, the greater the void inside of people. Jesus said, “One’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions” (Luke 12:15 ESV). There is a greater purpose in your life than completing your education, running a job or business, getting married and having kids, retiring, having grand kids or waiting for your time of death to arrive. This is our life from a purely materialistic perspective.
Genesis 1:26-27 continues to echo its timeless message. God created us in His image, to be like Him. It is in our relationship with Him that everything else finds its meaning. There is something in you that is greater than yourself. There is eternity in your heart, and you yearn to be in relationship with the One who inhabits eternity.
MEDITATE
Why is it that even the wealthiest, most powerful, famous, etc still find life meaningless if they are out of God’s will?
APPLY THE WORD
Do not spend your living for the earth. Of course, neither should you spend your life living as though you are a spirit and the things of the earth are devilish! No! Material things will make sense when God is at the center. Seek ye first the kingdom of God and make it your priority in life.
PRAY
Pray the Lord will keep you from the deception of living our lives solely chasing material things.
