And the four living creatures, each of them with six wings, are full of eyes all around and within, and day and night they never cease to say, “Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!”(Revelation 4:8 ESV)
John saw the worship setting in heaven with four living creatures, who are heavenly beings, having wings and full of eyes. These heavenly beings, in the order of Cherubims and Seraphims, worshipped the Lord with the words “Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come”.
These heavenly beings have been with the Lord since they were created. Yet in all eternity, God’s holiness continues to amaze them. They are always in awe of Who God is and continually worship Him. If these heavenly beings, with greater knowledge of God than humans possess, are perpetually in awe of God’s holiness and eternal existence, then our God is indeed big!
Holiness, as these heavenly beings declare, is not an issue of sinlessness as we classically think today. God has been holy before there ever was sin. In Jeremiah 10:6, Jeremiah says “there is none like You, LORD”. Many of us will not think of holiness in this scripture yet it captures the heart of it. Holiness is God’s nature being separate from everything else in existence. He is separate and set apart in everything about Him. His presence is what defines holiness. A place is holy because God is in it!
Our God is beyond our wildest imaginations. We will forever be amazed in eternity of Who this eternal and great God really is.
