For in the wilderness shall waters break out, And streams in the desert
Then shall the lame man leap as an hart, and the tongue of the dumb sing: for in the wilderness shall waters break out, and streams in the desert. (Isaiah 35:6 KJV)
Isaiah prophesied about the days when the Messiah would be on earth and said the lame man will leap like a deer and the tongue of the dumb will sing. Miracles everywhere! Then he continues and says, “for in the wilderness shall waters break out, and streams in the desert”. This verse provides a contextual meaning to this phrase which we all know from John the Baptist’s comments in the New Testament.
John said he was the one “crying in the wilderness”. That wilderness or desert was not merely the physical desert of Judea. In this verse, the Lord says waters will break out or streams will rush down deserts. What does this mean? Water in general refers to divine supply to meet our needs, physical or spiritual. A desert is a place where there is no water. It is used figuratively to describe our lives without any divine interventions to meet our needs.
When Jesus showed up, the power of God was available to perform miracles and bring healing to the people. Water finally gushed out in a dry place. The power of God was finally on earth meeting needs, in this case, of physical healing. The earth is very dry right now. Needs everywhere, physical and spiritual. The Lord says out of your belly is gushing out rivers of living waters! You are the oasis to the dying world around us.
MEDITATE
What is the meaning of waters breaking out in the wilderness?
APPLY THE WORD
Is there a wilderness in your life, a need that remains unfulfilled year after year? There is a river that makes glad the city of God (Ps. 46:4)! That river also gives water to the dry land around you. Let those waters arise and gush out as you grow and yield to the Spirit.
PRAY
Thank the Lord for the blessing of having water in a dry place.
