Fixing our eyes on Jesus
Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. (Hebrews 12:2 KJV)
Christianity is living Christ’s life. In essence, it is living the life of another Person. This is the reason why the greatest hindrance to a successful christian life is our failure to let go of our own life. Christianity is far from being a mere religion as we know religions in the world. It is God replicating Himself and living in and through a human being. Until this Truth becomes a reality to us, it will be difficult to enjoy, cherish or flourish in Christianity.
Fixing our eyes on Jesus, then, is of utmost importance. What does this mean from a practical perspective? Let me use a scripture example. Peter and John healed a lame man and the people were astonished beyond measure, as expected. Peter said to them:
“And when Peter saw it, he answered unto the people, Ye men of Israel, why marvel ye at this? or why look ye so earnestly on us, as though by our own power or holiness we had made this man to walk?” (Acts 3:12 KJV)
He reveals a critical truth regarding keeping our eyes on Jesus. He said it was not by their own power or their holiness. They did not heal this man because they had healing virtue in themselves. Neither did God’s power work powerfully through them because they earned it through their holy lives. The power and holiness was Jesus’s. They were simply enjoying the life of Jesus. Fixing our eyes on Jesus is learning to live daily, trusting and absolutely dependent on Jesus and not on ourself. If you are looking for a key to a thriving christian life, here it is.
MEDITATE
What does it mean to look unto Jesus or to fix our eyes upon Him?
APPLY THE WORD
How conscious are you of your own strengths and weaknesses? The less of this consciousness you have, the better for you! Losing this consciousness is a daily Christian struggle for almost all of us. Be intentional, and keep your eyes on Jesus only.
PRAY
Thank the Lord for being an unmovable foundation for us to stand on.
