But the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the men children alive (Exodus 1:17 KJV)

There is power in number. When the enslaved Jews multiplied in Egypt, Pharaoh knew he had to do something otherwise, Israel will become the threat to their survival as a nation. He signed a malicious degree that every male child born should be thrown into the river by the midwives. The Hebrew midwives feared God and did not obey the king of Egypt’s commandment but saved the male children.

The midwives had to deal with Pharaoh. We might not have Pharaohs today but will encounter similar situations that will demand we obey God against the prevailing trend. Beware, it is never right for us to disobey God’s command to obey any man, whoever they are. We cannot disobey God and do wrong or sin to obey some political or spiritual authority. Worst still, you must not obey a false prophetic instruction that claims to be from God but commanding you to do what is against the Lord.

When the midwives honored the Lord, verse 20 tells us “Therefore God dealt well with the midwives: and the people multiplied, and waxed very mighty” (Exodus 1:20 KJV). It takes guts to stand on the Word of God in any capacity, especially if it goes against people around you. We need boldness and courage. The Spirit will strengthen you. Just beware of human devices that put pressure on you to go against God.

MEDITATE

Was it risky for the midwives to go against Pharoah’s commandments? Have you ever been pressured by a friend, boss, Christian leader, political ruler, etc., to do something sinful or against the Lord?

APPLY THE WORD

The midwives feared God above men. That should be your posture. Fear the Lord, and depart from evil. Do not allow any man in any capacity to make you do what you know is against the Lord just because you want to please that individual.
