The Finisher of Our Faith
Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith …(Heb. 12:2 KJV)
Jesus is the Finisher of our faith. The word “finisher” is better translated Perfecter, meaning the One who brings our faith to maturity. Jesus is both the Author( or Founder, Captain) and the Perfecter of our faith. In other words, He is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the last for everything faith-related! Faith begins with Him, and reaches its full potential and maturity level in Him.
When a man looks unto Jesus, faith is birthed in the heart. As that man continues to look unto Jesus, the faith that is born in the heart grows and becomes mature and strong. There is more about the word “looking” here. It goes beyond mere fixing your gaze on something or someone. It means to first take your eyes off something else to fix them on another. This is crucial. If faith has to grow to maturity, our eyes must be taken from ourselves, circumstances and other people and be focused on Jesus alone. Peter took his eyes off Jesus and looked at the waves of the sea and he immediately began to drown. Faith mandates that our eyes be fixated permanent on Jesus and away from other things.
The Jesus that you look at today is His Word. Your eyes are your focus, attention, and trust. Whatever has your eyes has your spiritual gaze. Your eyes should be removed from everything else and be focused on Jesus, that is, keep your attention, focus and trust on what He has told you, despite what everything or everyone else might be saying, including yourself!
MEDITATE
If Jesus is the Perfecter of faith, how then can I grow my faith to become strong and mature? ( Rom. 10:17).
APPLY THE WORD
Whatever has your eyes has your life. The options are so many—the fears of life, your own weaknesses, money, safety, disease, etc. You will know what has your eyes from what occupies your thoughts the most. Jesus wants to be the Object of your gaze at all times. Keep your eyes on the Lord.
PRAY
Ask the Lord to help you always look away from other things and keep your eyes on Him.
