Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil (Ephesians 6:11, KJV)
The Lord commands us to put on the whole armor of God so that we will be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. What is the armor of God?
The metaphor here is that of the military clothing or armory of the Roman Soldier. In brief, the Lord was saying you should dress up and be ready for spiritual warfare! What comes to your mind when you hear “the armor of God”? If I told you that Satan is about to attack you, what would you do? The secret lies in the word “wiles”.
The armor of God is meant to help us stand against the wiles of the devil. Wiles here means schemes, strategies, tricks or the ways he deceives us. The Lord did not say put on the armor to stand against the power of Satan but his tricks. The armor of God, your clothing or armory of warfare, refers to your Christian character, attitudes, manner of life and position in life. He is talking about how you should walk in faith, know the truth of God’s Word, choose to live righteously rather than in sin etc.
Spiritual warfare has been mystified in many Christian circles but it is not complex. Again, believers, especially us charismatics, need to return to the simplicity of what the Bible teaches about what spiritual or christian warfare really is. Put on God’s armor, which in totality is the Christ-like character and way of life.
What is the meaning of the phrase “wiles of the devil” as noted above? Why do you think the Lord did not say “power of the devil”?
