For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful. (1 Cor. 14:14 KJV)
Praying in tongues is a unique gift of the Holy Spirit to the believer. The scripture above teaches us that, when we pray in tongues, the “spirit prayeth” and the “understanding is unfruitful”. This gift bypasses the mind using a language and utterance from the activity of the Holy Spirit.
In 1 Cor. 14:4, a personal benefit of this gift is clearly portrayed by the Apostle Paul saying “He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church” (1 Cor. 14:4 KJV). Praying in tongues will build up your spiritual life. It amplifies the results of prayer. I’ve had countless personal experiences when praying in tongues had so energized me with divine power, that I felt like I could jump over a mountain! The more I pray in tongues, the more discerning my mind becomes. In areas where I struggled with doubt, confusion, or indecision, I was instead left with peace, clarity, and purpose.
Pray in tongues, and do it often, to continually stir and activate the power of the Holy Spirit inside of you. As a gift, it is freely available to every believer. It does not make you a Christian, and will not determine if you go to heaven. But if you want to walk in God’s manifest power, you will have to put this gift to work.
What do we speak to God about when we pray in tongues (1 Cor. 14:2)? How can praying in this Spirit language help you in your daily spiritual life?
APPLY THE WORD
Make up your mind to pray in tongues more than you have before. If you don’t yet speak in tongues, look around for a believer who can minister the gift to you and get started!
Thank the Lord for the wonderful gift of praying tongues. Take a moment right now to pray in tongues and allow His Spirit refresh and energize you.
