For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. (2 Tim. 1:7 KJV)
The scriptures teach us how to overcome fear in our lives. Fear stems from our sense of vulnerability to the forces beyond our control in our environment. The things that people fear, whether real or imaginary, are numerous. Nevertheless, fear is a powerful force that controls, and even ruins, many lives. If we do not take control over fear, it will make us its slaves.
The scripture above teaches us that God has not given to us the spirit of fear. First, it calls fear “a spirit”, not that it is a “spirit being” like a demon, but it is an invisible, powerful, and controlling influence. We have all experienced fear, and when it comes, it is often as though some powerful spiritual influence takes over us, and we can’t break free. The antidote for fears is trust and faith in God. The origins of human fear are beyond what science or psychology alone can tell us. The Word of God tells us that fear has its very roots from a spiritual catastrophe that occurred in the Garden of Eden, when sin entered into the world. Man became vulnerable to his environment. Trusting in God brings Him in control of our lives and circumstances, and takes the pressures of life off our shoulders. Rather than fear, God has given to us the spirit of power, love, and a sound mind (self-control). Your life is in the very hands of God, and you are not as vulnerable as you might think. Trust God. Defeat fear with your faith.
Ponder upon the verse above. Declare it to yourself again and again, and see yourself in that scripture. Is the spirit of fear controlling you?
Ask the Lord for the grace to defeat fear in every aspect of your life by faith in Christ. Pray that the Spirit of God will teach you how to overcome fear in your life today.
