He Opened Not His Mouth

He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth (Isa. 53:7 KJV)

Silent as a sheep image showing sheep

Jesus was charged with crimes He did not commit, and He remained silent before His accusers. He did not plead His cause or try to defend Himself. In fact, it was so unusual and shocking to His accusers and judges that the scriptures say Pilate who was seating on the Judgemetn seat marveled as Mark records “But Jesus yet answered nothing; so that Pilate marvelled” (Mk. 15:5 KJV).

Jesus died in weakness ( 2 Cor. 13:4). He died as a helpless Man. He died as though He did not have any power or strength to defend Himself. He died in your place. Remember His sacrifice. We are saved today because He did not open His mouth but allowed His agonizing death by crucifixion.

However, there is more to His silence than just not defending Himself. He was much God as He was Man. What comes out of His mouth as God when He opens His mouth? His Word, to devour His enemies like fire! He did not open His mouth also means He restrained Himself from using His divine power and resources. Had He opened His mouth and rebuked them, creation probably would have dissolved! When the disciples tried to fight back using human methods, He asked them if they thought He could not call for legions of Angels to help Him( Matt. 26:53). He was not cut off from His divine resources. He chose not to open His mouth so that He can be crucified in our place.

MEDITATE

Can you see part of the reason why He is called a Lamb in the scripture above? ( Think of the vulnerability and defenselessness of a lamb). Please open your mouth now an declare the words of  Isa. 53:7 above!

APPLY THE WORD

Jesus closed His mouth because He had to die. You have to open your mouth to live! We confess Him as Lord to be saved. We also speak His Word to circumstances that are challenging our life!

PRAY

Praise Him this moment as you remember His sacrifice for you.
