Build your house upon a rock

Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: (Matthew 7:24 KJV)

Jesus said those who hear His words and do them can be compared to a wise man who built his house upon a rock. The Lord is certainly not interested in the architectural construction of a physical building. He is using figurative language to teach us a profound truth regarding how humans were made to function. He tells us our lives can be compared to a house which has some form of foundation.

But what is the foundation of a person’s life? What does the Lord mean when He talks about the foundation of our lives? The foundation of a building supports the structure. So the foundation of every human being’s life refers to the hidden part of their lives (hidden man of the heart) that make people act or speak the way they do. What drives your behavior? At the very center of our lives is what we know and believe which we use to guide our lives, whether consciously or not.

Jesus is our foundation because we hear what He says, accept it, believe it and then allow it to control how we act or speak. Wise men and women build their lives upon a rock. Jesus is not the only foundation available to humanity in our sin-broken world, but He is the only true and sure foundation. There are faulty foundations in life.What drives us to commit sin? Why do some get hooked to an addiction? Something unseen controls people’s lives. That is what Jesus is after. Build your foundation upon Christ, the solid rock!

In principle, Christ is the foundation of every Christian. In practice, that is not always the case. What is the true foundation of your life? What really controls you? Is it money, pleasure, fame, acceptance by people, etc, etc? Do not build your life on a faulty foundation.
