Symptoms of Spiritual Fatigue
And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. (Galatians 6:9, KJV)

When your spirit is worn out, even small spiritual tasks can feel like mountains. You try to pray, but your words feel dry. You open your Bible, but nothing stirs your heart. Something is off—but what is it, and how do you fix it? This devotional will help you recognize the quiet signs of spiritual fatigue and discover how to recover the strength your soul desperately needs.
Before we go further, let’s clarify our key terms. Fatigue simply means running out of strength. We all understand physical fatigue—when your muscles are exhausted and you need rest or nourishment to recover. The same applies to your spirit and soul, which we’ll refer to collectively as spiritual. Spiritual fatigue, then, is the depletion of strength in your inner man—your mind, emotions, and will. Hebrews 12:3 puts it clearly:
For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds. (Hebrews 12:3, KJV)
Yes, you can become weary—mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.
So what are the symptoms of a life running low on spiritual strength? I find a helpful way to describe them is through three stages: a cold heart, a cold life, and cold service.
Spiritual fatigue always begins inwardly. The fire of God’s presence and power starts to wane. Things that once stirred you now feel dull. The joy of His presence fades. Hunger for intimacy with God grows faint. The heart that was once burning begins to cool—first to lukewarm, and then to cold if left unchecked.
A cold heart produces a cold Christian life. Zeal for righteousness fades. As Galatians 6:9 warns, we may grow weary of doing good. We might stop helping others as we once did. Prayer becomes mechanical or burdensome. Worship feels empty. Scripture no longer moves us. We might still go through the motions, but the heart is detached.
Eventually, this affects our service. Whether you’re a pastor, volunteer, or intercessor—spiritual fatigue shows in the way we serve. We become sluggish, discouraged, or even withdraw from our calling.
Whatever the outward cause, the root of spiritual fatigue is always the same: a depletion of spiritual strength. The solution? Renew your strength. Don’t let your spiritual tank run dry. Stay connected to the Source. And I leave you with this prophetic promise from Isaiah 40:31:
“But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”
Meditate
Have you noticed any signs of spiritual fatigue—sluggish prayer, slipping attitudes, or a cold heart? What is the Lord showing you through them?
Act on the Word
Don’t ignore the symptoms. Step away from spiritual autopilot and back into intimacy with God. Prioritize time with Him not to perform, but to be refreshed. He wants to renew your strength and restore your fire.
Pray
Father, open my eyes to the signs of spiritual fatigue. Restore my strength and revive my heart through Your presence.
