What is the Secret Place of the Most High?
He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty (Psalm 91:1, KJV)
The secret place of the Most High describes God as a shelter or dwelling place for His people. This devotional will briefly explain this phrase’s literal and figurative meaning, especially its fulfillment in the New Testament.
The Hebrew word for the phrase secret place above is seter. It means a hiding place or shelter. Typically, the Temple in Jerusalem was a hiding or secret place in the land of Israel. However, the OT uses this phrase beyond the meaning of a physical shelter or the Temple.
Though the idea of a shelter would tempt us to think of a physical place, the OT clearly uses the secret place symbolically to refer to God’s presence. The Psalmist said: “Thou shalt hide them in the secret of thy presence from the pride of man (Psalm 31:20 KJV). Again, he uses the same word seter or hiding place and says plainly, “Thou art my hiding place and my shield” (Psalm 119:114 KJV). So the Israelites knew seter beyond the idea of the physical Temple—God Himself was the hiding place.
In 2 Cor. 5:17, Paul says, “Therefore if any man is in Christ .” Today, God has a secret place anyone can enter and dwell there. That secret place is Christ Himself, a dwelling for His people. Though many of us are familiar with the truth that we are God’s House, many do not know that God is also a House for His people to dwell in. And since the OT was only a shadow of the good things to come, it is no surprise that God’s hiding place found its ultimate fulfillment in the NT.
The privileges of those who dwell in God’s secret place are beyond imagination: they are new creatures, partakers of the divine nature, blessed with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places…
