The Meaning of “I am the Way”
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6, ESV)
Among the well-known “I am” statements of Jesus is the remarkable “I am the Way.” To comprehend this statement, we will delve into two crucial aspects of our main verse—the context and the meaning of “way.”
In John 14, Jesus told His disciples He was going somewhere to prepare a place for them. He emphasized that the disciples knew where He was going and the way to get there (John 14:4). Then Thomas asked Him this important question: “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” (John 14:5, ESV)
In response, Jesus offers clarity in John 14:6. To answer the “where,” the place He was going to, He declares, “No one comes to the Father.” His destination was not a physical location but a return to a Person—the Father.
So, how can people get to the Father? Jesus explains, “I am the Way” to the Father, and “no one comes to the Father except through Me.” The term “way” signifies a road or path guiding to a destination. If anyone desires to approach and reach the Father (salvation), the only way is through Jesus.
To further clarify, Jesus being the Way means that just as we partake of Jesus, the Bread of Life, by believing in Him, we walk on Him as the Way or road to the Father by believing in Him as well.
This understanding leads to the realization that the Father is a dwelling place, and Jesus is the road that leads to that place. You already journeyed on that road the day you believed and arrived at the Father. You are already dwelling in God—your dwelling place!
Meditate
Ponder on the meaning of John 14:6, as explained above.
Apply the Word
The world needs to know there is only one way to God the Father—believing in Jesus. As believers, you also should recognize that you have already walked on the Road, the Way, and are now dwelling in God, your Hiding Place!
Pray
Thank the Father for sending Jesus to bring us to Him.
