And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind…. (Rom. 12:2)
Renew your mind, if you want to see the abundant life of Christ blossom in your daily life. It is critical to understand the full import of this instruction. This is not positive thinking. Jesus said new wine must be put into new bottles (Matt 9:17). The life of God lies in our spirit, and that is what gives us the victories described for us in the scriptures. However, it is the mind that directly controls your daily life here on the earth. The life in your spirit has to function through your mind or your soul to be expressed in your outward life. Renewing the mind simply means aligning your mind with God who dwells in your spirit so that He can flow uninhibited to your outward life. You see then that this is not mere positive thinking. It is thinking like God so that He can flow through you to subdue the circumstances in your life!
Renewing your mind is critical, otherwise, Christianity might seem to be a scam to you. You will experience a “result failure” as a Christian, which is a life without seeing the results the Bible says you should see. I met a man who once asked if it is really true that “if any man is in Christ, he is a new creature and old things are truly passed away”. He was still struggling with the old life, which forced him to seriously question the truthfulness and dependability of God’s Word. That’s what happens when we try to put new wine in old bottles. Getting born again is the first step, but a new outward life requires renewal of the mind and sanctification of the soul. An “unrenewed” mind or the carnal mind opposes or blocks the flow of the Spirit “Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be (Rom. 8:7 ).
If your feelings, thoughts, imaginations, etc are opposed to God’s, it will be impossible for you to function with Him, and you will obviously not see any expected results. Remember that your mind directly controls your outward life. Whatever has your mind has your outward life. If you want to live the new life, change your bottle because new wine requires new bottles. You cannot get divine results with our human mindset. Do not set yourself up for disappointments in your Christian life. Renew your mind daily. Meditation in God’s Word will do this for you effortlessly and without sweat-if only you will do it. You do not need to struggle to renew your mind. That’s the best part. Simply get your mind focused on the Word in constant meditation and see it become molded by the power of the Spirit struggle-free.
The Word in your mind and mouth (1 Tim 4:15; Josh 1: 8)
Meditating on the Word is the power in your hand to renew your mind. Remember that renewing your mind is not starting to “think positively” about the situations in your life. It is having the mind of Christ, thinking God’s thoughts, and having a spiritual mind that is aligned with the life of the Spirit. God’s Word is God’s thoughts. Ponder, and mutter the verse above, as your override your thoughts with God’s. As you keep your mind focused on God’s Word, you are allowing the time it needs to work its marvels and transform your life!
Water the Seed( word) to grow. Invite the Spirit’s strength! (Isa 32:15; Zach 4:6)
The greatest hindrance to renew your mind is your willingness to put yourself where God can actually change your mind. Yes, this is the bottom line-it is actually God who renews your mind by the power of His Spirit. It is struggle-free. If you are sweating too hard to get this done, you are probably doing it by yourself or following some psychological human method with tags such as “3 steps to changing your life”. Ask the Spirit of the Lord to help you make up your mind to be willing to renew your mind, by keeping His Word in your mind.
APPLY THE WORD TODAY!
Your door to a blessed life today is doing God’s Word. Refuse to be a hearer or reader only! (James 1:22-26)
Start today-see things the way God sees them through His Word. Rather than flare up with anger and bitterness, rather respond in love. This is God’s mindset. And it produces God’s results!
