Let No Corrupt Communication Proceed Out of Your Mouth
Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers (Eph. 4:29 KJV)
Our words carry power. They can mar or make our lives spiritually. Most importantly, they can be used as an instrument to effect supernatural changes in our lives. Paul speaking to the Ephesians said, “let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth.” The Lord wants our words to edify people who hear us.
Let me point out two important truths regarding this exhortation from the verse above. The first comes from the word “proceed.” This word is more profound than the mere natural exiting of words from a speaker. It is used of the going forth of the Word from God ( Matt. 4:4), which is spirit and life( John 6:63). Words have a spiritual and natural component. When you speak, you are not just releasing physical words but spiritual energy is going forth from you. This energy can build or destroy people’s lives.
The second essential truth is seen in verse 30 that follows Eph. 4:29 above. It says we should not grieve the Holy Spirit. It means we should not bring “sorrow to His heart, or make Him sad.” As believers, we can grieve the Holy Spirit by the way we live. One of the things that grieve the Spirit is “evil speaking”( v31) or “corrupt communication.” When we talk dirty, foul or curse, the Spirit is grieved.
The world might call it “cool talk.” God says it grieves Him. Watch your mouth, for from it proceeded spiritual energy that impacts those around you, but much more importantly, the Holy Spirit.
MEDITATE
Does it matter if this “corrupt talk” is only a joke or just having fun talking with friends? See Eph. 5:4. Declare that “my mouth is a wellspring of blessing to those who listen to me at all times.”
APPLY THE WORD
Be conscious of what you say. It is not some preacher’s rhetoric. It is clearly scriptural and is essential to our Father.
PRAY
Ask the Lord to help you clean your mouth and exercise control over what you say at all times and in all settings.
