I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. (Philippians 4:13, KJV)

Imagine possessing the strength to achieve anything you aspire to. This concept, rooted in the Old Testament promise of strength for God’s people, was exemplified by Paul in the New Testament and is meant to be a reality for us in Christ. But what does it truly mean to be empowered to do all things through Christ’s strength?

Understanding the context of Scripture is essential. While Philippians 4:13 is widely applicable, comprehending Paul’s original intent is crucial. What were the “things” Paul referred to? The preceding verse clarifies,

“I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need.” (Philippians 4:12, ESV)

Paul speaks of resilience across life’s varied circumstances—riches or poverty, honor or disregard. Importantly, he specifies actions aligned with Christ’s empowerment, excluding sinful endeavors.

The term “strengthens” means empowerment, enabling individuals to accomplish tasks with both physical and spiritual vigor. David, for example, received divine strength for his battles. This concept extends broadly in contemporary contexts: Christ empowers us in our professional lives, personal challenges, ministry efforts, etc. Just as He fortified Paul and David, He fortifies us to overcome all obstacles.

The foundation of this strength is Christ Himself, channeling His power through the Holy Spirit. It is this divine presence within us that equips us to face any challenge,

That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man. (Ephesians 3:16, KJV)

Therefore, when faced with daunting tasks or situations, remember the reservoir of strength within you. Acknowledge this power, have faith in Christ’s indwelling presence, and let Him guide you through moments of need.

Declare that “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

Apply the Word

Feeling drained or overwhelmed? Remember, the indwelling Christ is God’s power in you. Recognize your strength; understand who you are and Who resides in you. Cooperate with the Holy Spirit as you know, believe, and yield to Him.

Thank the LORD for the beautiful blessing of His strength in you.
