Honoring your father and mother
“’Honor your father and mother,’ which is the first commandment with promise” (Eph. 6:2 NKJ).
I heard a child once tell the parents, “You have no right to tell me what to do.” What a deplorable state culture is trending toward. Many of you might not be aware that disobedience to parents and loss of respect for parental authority is one of the signs of the end times. You might be shocked by this, but scripture says, “But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves…disobedient to parents” (2 Tim. 3:1-2 NKJ).
The scripture above has been mistakenly used exclusively for children who are still growing up. If you have a parent, no matter your age, the scripture commands us to honor, respect, and show reverence for them. And this command carries a blessing. Parental roles change as we move from kids to adults, but not the scripture regarding parental honor. The —they gave a spiritual excuse for dishonoring parents when they said, “If someone tells his father or mother, ‘Whatever help you would have received from me is given to God’” (Matt. 15:5 NET). I heard someone speak disrespectfully to their mother one day and I almost choked. I couldn’t believe my ears; that individual might be surprised to learn why some things might not be working for them. Train your children to honor their parents, and adults and parents should revere and honor their own parents. There is a blessing for this.
