He that Dwelleth in the Secret Place of the Most High

He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. (Psalm 91:1, KJV)

Have you ever wondered where you dwell spiritually? Psalm 91:1 introduces us to a profound concept: God has a secret place and those who dwell there are sheltered under His mighty protection. Let’s delve into this secret place and what it means to inhabit it.

“Dwelleth” implies more than just a physical presence; it denotes a perpetual, enduring habitation. Just as you reside in your city or house, the Psalmist points us to a spiritual dwelling place for our spirit.

In Psalm 91:1, the Psalmist refers to a spiritual dwelling place where your spirit dwells. Just as your body physically dwells somewhere, your spirit spiritually dwells somewhere spiritual. What is the secret place of the most high? There are two important parts to this question. First, we need to know what the Psalmist had in mind when he wrote about the secret place of the most High. Second, we need to know what this means to us today.

In the Old Testament, the “secret place of the most High” could be seen as the Temple in Jerusalem, a haven of divine protection. This imagery is echoed in Psalm 27:5, which speaks of God hiding us in His tabernacle and setting us upon a rock during times of trouble.

Moreover, Psalm 91:4 paints a vivid picture of God as a bird sheltering its young under its wings, hinting at a nurturing, protective presence.

However, what does this secret place signify for us in today’s context? Here lies a transformative truth: God Himself is a dwelling place for His people. While many of us grasp the concept of believers as God’s Temple, the reciprocal truth is equally powerful — God is our House. In the New Testament, Christ is the fulfillment of this secret place of the Most High. In Him, we find shelter from divine wrath and the chaos of sin and Satan. The frequent New Testament reference to being “in Christ” reinforces this truth.

Jesus Himself affirms this in John 6:56 (KJV): “He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him.” As Christians, you are the living fulfillment of Psalm 91:1, dwelling in the secret place of the Most High—Christ Himself.
