He saved us and called us to a holy calling
Who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began (2 Timothy 1:9, ESV)
Christianity is a heavenly calling. It is God calling human beings He has chosen to a special and glorious life of existing in oneness with Him. The word “call” or “calling” in Church circles is almost always used to refer to the call for ministry. You will immediately realize that the call of God in the verse above has nothing to do with ministry. It is a call of salvation, for every believer in Christ. Some have labeled it the “general call” in an attempt to separate it from the more specific call to ministry. But what is this call?
In very simple terms, a call is simply God’s invitation to us to something unique He has reserved for us. The Christian life is a unique call of God extending to humans to join God’s family as His children. As God’s children, we share in His divine nature and enjoy being made partakers of His Son and His Spirit. The blessings in Christ are beyond human compression, and Peter summed it with the words “you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a peculiar people…”. You have been called to a life, one of intimacy, oneness and fellowship with God for all eternity.
Interestingly, this call of salvation for every believer is the most important call emphasized in the New Testament, far more than the special call to ministry. It must be written on your heart that you are called of God with a holy calling. As a Christian, you have been called to be a child of God and full expression of His life, power and presence!
MEDITATE
How did the Lord call us from 2 Tim. 1:9 above? Please take a moment now to think upon and then speak the words of the main verse above with your mouth as you meditate on this scripture.
APPLY THE WORD
You are called to be a partaker of God’s nature. In fact, I will say that God has called you to enjoy eternal life, according to John 10:10! It is a calling to enjoy your relationship with God! It is not your doing. You did not call yourself. God called you, so make proper use of the invitation!
PRAY
Thank the Father for the privilege of being called by His grace. Ask the Spirit to help you fully understand what God has called you into.
