How Faith Comes
So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God (Romans 10:17 KJV)
The Apostle Paul gives us heaven’s method to increase our faith. This heavenly system of growing faith is God’s solution to our faith problems. If you struggle to believe God’s Word or are curious to know how to increase your faith, this devotional will be an eye-opener for your next level of faith.
Before explaining how faith comes, let us briefly review the current faith status of most Christians. As a believer and minister, I noticed through my personal struggles and ministering to other believers that we have a faith problem. This faith crisis is paradoxical: believers are struggling to believe. Furthermore, faith remains mysterious in the minds of many believers. Notwithstanding, it remains the foundation of our relationship with God and daily Christian living. We must therefore overcome all obstacles and grow in our walk of faith.
Knowing how faith comes to us is the beginning of growing in faith. Romans 10:17 says, “faith comes by hearing.” First, it lays the foundation that faith comes from—we can acquire or increase our faith. Therefore, if we find ourselves faithless or with little faith in any situation, this verse shows us that faith can come to us. And it goes further to show us how it comes.
Faith comes by hearing and hearing the Word of God (or Christ as in the Greek text). The key terms are “hearing” and “Word of Christ.” Faith comes by hearing—not just by reading. It is the voice of God in His Word that triggers faith. Hearing God’s voice is a crucial concept in the New Testament, and I have written many articles on it. His voice is not necessarily an audible sound but the breathing of the Holy Spirit on a person’s heart that makes God’s Word come alive in the now. You can hear His voice by reading the Bible or listening to a sermon. It is God’s voice in the words we read or hear that bring faith.
So, hearing God’s voice is the cornerstone for acquiring or growing our faith.
What is the difference between the voice of God and the Word of God?
We cannot overemphasize the importance of faith. If you know how critical it is, you will invest your time and resources to increase your faith. Faith comes by hearing God’s words. It springs up instantly when the Spirit breaths upon scripture in your heart and brings it alive (when you hear His voice). Faith does not come by just reading the scriptures; it comes by reading and hearing as you read!
Ask the Father to help you grow in faith.
