For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds (2 Corinthians 10:4 ESV)

God has given us effective weapons to destroy and demolish strongholds in our lives. The verse above did not explicitly say demonic strongholds. However, Satan surely has a vested interest to see that we develop these strongholds so that he can use them as a safe hideout to work with tremendous success in our lives.

What comes to your mind when you hear of spiritual strongholds? Do you know that you also have some strongholds in your lives, whether big or small, and whether you know it or not? These strongholds are not some demons in the air, marine spirits,   demonic shrines  or curses that are fighting against us. There is no question these things are there, but as I have shared repeatedly, Satan’s greatest activity in your life is not in these things. It is in your mind, your emotions, desires, etc. 

Paul goes on to explain to us what he calls strongholds in the next verse and says 

“We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:5 ESV).

The strongholds in your life are the way you think, which are contrary to God’s will and plans for your life. Let me use a surprising example of a stronghold. If a Christian does not believe that miracles occur today, for whatever reason, that doctrine or understanding of God’s Word is a stronghold in their life that quenches God’s power as water quenches burning coals. Your stronghold is what you know and believe that is not the Truth and is contrary to God’s plans in your life. It might be a doctrine, your own way of looking at life, the society in which you live, etc. No matter the origin, a stronghold in your life cuts you off from God’s supernatural interventions and provisions.

God has given you the Word and His Spirit to protect you from having strongholds in your life that are responsible for repeated suffering and failures though you might not even realize it. Roll your sleeves and start the demolishing process.

APPLY THE WORD

The PRIMARY tool to destroy strongholds in your life is the TRUTH of the WRITTEN  word of God. This primary tool is NOT prophecy today, “what God told me”, teaching, preaching, church doctrine, etc.  Yes, all of these have their place, but they are SECONDARY. This order, written word first, before the others MUST NEVER be reversed in your life.  The Spirit will use the Word to begin opening your eyes to thought patterns in your life you never knew were responsible for many of your troubles.  That is why it is so important NOW than ever before to learn how to study the Word of God for yourself. I cannot overemphasize this.

PRAY

Ask the Father to help you start destroying strongholds that might affect your spiritual life, ministry, finances, health, marriage, etc.
