Desire spiritual gifts • Deshen Daily

Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy (1 Corinthians 14:1, KJV)

Glory & Grace Daily for the day before was focused on the fruit of the Spirit. Today, we will look at the other side of our Christian life, which has to do with spiritual gifts for Christian service. The fruit of the Spirit is clearly a priority in our lives. However, this in no way undermines the importance of spiritual gifts, as seen in the instruction given to us in the verse above.

The Lord commands us to desire spiritual gifts. This is remarkable! He had told us in 1 Cor. 12 that the Spirit is the One who distributes these gifts as He pleases. However, He tells us in this verse that we should desire spiritual gifts. That immediately tells us that our desires have a role to play. This is very insightful. God wants you to desire spiritual gifts, which implies that He wants to see a desire in your heart expressed to Him so that He can respond. It matters if you desire a spiritual gift or not.

Furthermore, it reminds us of the fact that our desires are not evil in themselves. God delights to give us the desires of our hearts. You can see for yourself that your desires can have a role to play in the operations of spiritual gifts in your life. I remember desiring earnestly in my teenage years that the Lord would reveal Himself to me. I was really hungry to know Him. Little did I know that what I was asking for was the gift of the word of wisdom. I later realize God gave me the desire of my heart. He made me desire something He wanted to give me!

The Lord is commanding you today that you should desire spiritual gifts. I have started desiring another spiritual gift to see it grow in my life, and I will tell you later when the Lord responds to that desire! What about you? Your desire matters. What gift do you desire to have so you can effectively serve God’s people?
