What Manner of Man is This!

But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him (Matthew 8:27, KJV)

Jesus was a walking wonder on the earth. It is easy for us to read about His life today and understand that He was God in retrospect. I want you to put your feet in the shoes of those who were living with Him. They did not know Him as God in the flesh. They knew Him as a prophet in Israel.

The disciples were in the sea, tossed to and fro by the waves and were already sinking as water began to accumulate in the boat. If you have ever entered a boat or ship and sailed in the sea, you will immediately relate with the horror of these people. It was not as if they had cell phones to call 911 to send rescue helicopters! They remembered that Jesus was in the boat, and they rushed to ask Him to pray for them as their last resort. The first shock they had was that they found Him asleep. He had a rare moment being alone and could finally have some sleep in a boat that is drowning!

When they got Him up, He rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. It is only our imagination that can tell us the looks on these men’s faces. Their words finally disclosed their astonishment and wonder: “what manner of man is this?”. They learned that there are different kinds or sorts of men. Jesus was a different kind. There was a Man that winds, and the sea obey Him. How wonderful is our Savior!

Did Jesus operate on the earth as God or as a Man that is anointed by the Spirit?

APPLY THE WORD

The day you received the Holy Spirit, you became a different “kind, sort or manner” of man or woman: the Jesus-kind that amazed the people! You are an extension of His life and work, His flesh and bones on the earth right now! Rule and reign in the midst of your enemies! ( Ps. 110:1-2)
