What does it mean to be one spirit with the Lord?
But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit (1 Corinthians 6:17, KJV)
There are a few verses in scripture that make you hold your breath when you come to understand fully what they are saying. 1 Cor. 6:17 above is one of those verses. It says whoever is joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with the Lord. It is our mysterious oneness with God.
Man is spirit, soul, and body. God is spirit. When a person becomes born again, his or her spirit becomes recreated. He essentially receives a new spirit from God, which is the new birth. However, something else quite remarkable takes place when we get saved. We receive the Person of the Holy Spirit from God. That means a believer in Christ has two “spirits” inside of him. His human spirit and the Holy Spirit. The big question is this : does our born again spirit and the Holy Spirit live side by side inside of us? Or does the Holy Spirit replace our human spirit? The verse above provides the answer to these questions.
When we receive the Holy Spirit, He becomes one with our human spirit. He “fills” our human spirit, meaning He completely immerses Himself into our human spirit and fills every part of it with Himself to such an extent that our human spirit carries His nature and qualities yet it remains the human spirit that still lives in us. It means it is still our human spirit but really no longer our human spirit but the Holy Spirit that has completely filled it!! This is the mystery Paul was trying really hard to explain in Gal. 2:20 below:
“I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me…” (Galatians 2:20, KJV)
The spirit that is currently animating your body and mind is the human spirit that is one with the Holy Spirit. God’s life is flowing in your veins!
MEDITATE
There is a common misconception amongst us about the time a believer receives the Holy Spirit from God. This is often mistaken with what we have traditionally called the “baptism of the Holy Spirit,” which is a distinct experience from salvation and an encounter with power. You received the Holy Spirit the day you believed in Jesus ( John 7:37-38, Rom 8:8-9, 1 Cor. 12:13…).
APPLY THE WORD
The truth in the devotional above should become your consciousness. The human spirit in you has been fully immersed in God and God in you. It is only a matter of maturity before the Spirit of God will be fully expressed in you. Think of what will happen when Jesus returns, and we receive our new spiritual bodies where the Holy Spirit will have full unrestricted expression!
PRAY
Thank the Lord for the wonderful gift of His Spirit to be one with us.
