Your mouth controls your life
“Behold, the ships also, though they are so great and are driven by strong winds, are still directed by a very small rudder, wherever the inclination of the pilot desires” (Jas. 3:4 NAS).
Your words are the most powerful influence that determines how your life turns out here on earth. This might appear to be an over-statement or exaggeration, but the scriptures clearly warn us about the power of our words. The scripture above says a very big ship that is driven by strong winds is directed by a very small rudder. The next verse says “So also the tongue is a small part of the body, and yet it boasts of great things. Behold, how great a forest is set aflame by such a small fire!” (Jas. 3:5 NAS).
We know that words can cause deep emotional wounds, ruin relationships, get us into trouble—or even get us out of trouble! However, these physical effects of words are only the tip of the iceberg of the influence of words in the realm of the spirit. If you can remember that words created the universe you see around you, then it is easier to understand that words can create or mar your world. Start speaking life to yourself and your circumstances.
MEDITATE
Replace the idea of a ship in the scripture above with your life. Can you picture how your mouth controls your life as a little rudder controls a big ship?
APPLY THE WORD
The scripture above implies that you can use your words to create your world. This is not just learning to speak right, but to speak God’s Words. Proverbs 16:24 (NAS) says “Pleasant words are a honeycomb, Sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.” Be conscious of the power of your words, and start speaking words that will bring healing to your soul and body today!
PRAY
Thank the Lord for putting power in your mouth to be able to steer your life in the right direction. Ask Him for the grace to control and properly use your words.
