Homo spiritus is a new phrase  that is quite appealing to the mind and raises lots of curiosity. It is important to find out the truth beyond the current hype about these two words.

Current Trend of Thought

The term has been popularized by the teachings of  Dr. David R Hawkins , especially in his   book entitled “Subjectivity and   Reality” published in 2013.

He uses kinesiology testing to rate what he describes as the subjective levels of an individual’s consciousness, emotion and sense of reality, using a scale from 0 to 100, where 0  is  death and nonexistence and   1,000 denotes levels of   men like  Jesus Christ and Buddha.  E.g shame is below 20, fear is 100 and anger is 150. He uses a threshold of 200 as a cutoff beyond which an individual is said to have attained   integrity and truth, the level of enlightenment. This level of consciousness is said to have been attained in 1986, when the collective consciousness of the human race crossed the 200 mark per his research findings, and entered into integrity and truth.

He states

“The appearance in humanity of the realization of God as the ultimate Reality, substrate, and source of Existence and Creation marked the beginning of the emergence of a new, evolutionary branch of mankind called Homo spiritus. The term Homo spiritus refers to the awakened man who has bridged the evolutionary leap from physical to spiritual, from form to nonform, and from linear to nonlinear…”.

His ideas are in perfect alignment with a psychiatrist, researcher and a spiritual teacher. As a scientist, my mind is fascinated by his ideas,but as a believer versed in biblical truth, it is instantly evident to me that Dr. Hawkin’s ideas are entirely different from God’s position statement   about this subject as revealed in the Biblical scriptures. It will be a more captivating journey to discover what the Bible has to say about this new species of humans.

Dr. Hawkins should be given credit for raising an awareness about the phrase Homo spiritus, especially because he came close. Amongst others, there are three things that I find interesting about the ideas presented by Dr. Hawkins about homo spiritus.

1. The idea of Homo spiritus
2. Homo sapiens as distinct from homo spiritus
3. There is change from Homo sapiens to homo spiritus

Etymology of Homo spiritus

The name Homo spiritus is closely related  to Homo sapiens  which is the  scientific name for the human species when  humans are   classified based on taxonomy as other organisms.   Homo is the genus, which has different species. Homo sapiens is one species of the genus Homo. The scientific name for our human species is Homo sapiens sapiens, which is a subspecies. The term Homo is Latin for “man” while sapiens means “wise”, therefore Homo sapiens means “wise man”.

The word spiritus is the latin word for “breath”   which is also used for   “spirit “. Therefore Homo spiritus means “spirit man” or more loosely “spiritual man”.

 

Homo spiritus in the Bible

The Word of God given to us in the Bible teaches us about the spiritual man

The Scriptures tell us, “The first man, Adam, became a living person.”¹ But the last Adam — that is, Christ — is a life-giving Spirit. What comes first is the natural body, then the spiritual body comes later. Adam, the first man, was made from the dust of the earth, while Christ, the second man, came from heaven. Earthly people are like the earthly man, and heavenly people are like the heavenly man. (1 Corinthians. 15:45-48 New Living Translation)

Notice the words “first man” and “second man” in verse 47? The reason I stated above that the ideas of Dr. Hawkins are interesting to me is because they come very close to what the Bible teaches but are fundamentally and explicitly distinct and different and in no way reconcilable.

Homo spiritus

The Bible teaches that there is a second man, distinct from the first, called the spiritual man. This breed of men possess spiritual faculties and can operate in the higher level of the realm of spiritual realities on the earth. Its essence is not a consciousness, an enlightenment of the higher attributes of the human mind but a spiritual nature.

There is a spirit in man.

But there is a spirit in man, And the breath of the Almighty giveth them understanding. (Job 32:8 American Standard Version)

We will have a better understanding of   who we really are as humans   when we collectively agree that there is a spirit in man, and we are not simply a mind with its many faculties and a body.

This second man is noted to be coming from heaven. Jesus began talking about Homo spiritus more than 2 thousand years ago.

Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus who was a member of the Jewish ruling council.He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs you are doing if God were not with him.” Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.¹ ” “How can someone be born when they are old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!” Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit¹ gives birth to spirit. (John. 3:1-6 New International Version)

The Apostle Paul talked about this second man, the spiritual man and called him a new creation

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come:¹ The old has gone, the new is here! (2 Corinthians. 5:17 New International Version)

The Apostle Peter also talked about a new man being born, again

For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God. (1 Peter . 1:23 New International Version)

The rest of the new testament is abounding with descriptions about this new man, the spiritual man or Homo spiritus,

Homo sapiens

This is called the first man or the earthly man.

When we see what man has become today, it is hard to avoid the questions about the existence of a loving Creator, except you know the Truth He has revealed.

And our Creator God has told us that,

…But it was not this way from the beginning. (Matt. 19:8 NIV)

Humans were not created as such from the beginning.

God, who was there at the beginning, has told us what happened with man. Where are those evil desires you struggle with coming from? Why is there evil in the world? Why are there conflicting voices in your heart especially when you are about to do evil? Etc. God has told us, sin and satan came into our world and forever changed us and the world in which we live in. As men, we somehow have chosen to change the name of the former ( sin) and call it different synonyms like weaknesses, faults or mistakes and elected to almost completely erase the second( Satan) from our vocabulary or consciousness. But these things are like a lighthouse-they do not move even if the approaching ship is a warship loaded with military artillery. Accepting, denying or rejecting the reality of their existence as we grow smarter is like a war ship wanting to make a lighthouse move. Impossible task! The proof of their existence is multiplying exponentially around us.

A futile endeavor

Jesus vividly said it to Saul who was on a personal mission to extinguish the Christian Church

We all fell to the ground, and I heard a voice saying to me in Aramaic, ‘Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me? It is hard for you to kick against the goads.’ (Acts 26:14 New International Version)

There is a spirit in man, and this is where man’s problem lies. God originally created him not to live like a slave to the world around him, but when his spirit got affected by the cancer called sin, his downward spiral has not ceased since then. We will be kidding as men if we imagine that developing the human mind will someday do the magic and be the panacea of the world’s   human behavior disasters.

What is really wrong with man?

There is something wrong with Homo sapiens. And that is in his spirit. We have come a long way in discovering the structure and function of the body, as well as the framework and functioning of the mind. The next major breakthrough in the scientific study of man with a tremendous potential impact will be the acknowledgement of this truth, that there is a spirit in man. This will not be a discovery, for God has long shown to us that there is a spirit within us.It is understandable why such a step in science will be chaotic, for the spirit and the principles of its world are in a different dimension than what we are familiar with. And the hard questions that such an acknowledgement will force us to ponder upon are better left alone by some. Nevertheless, if we will know success as a race, we will have to confront the truth. Seeking to cover, despise, avoid or undermine the truth does nothing other than prolong our ignorance and suffering and ultimately lead to our eternal demise. The wise Apostle Paul says,

For we can do nothing against the truth, but for the truth. (2 Corinthians. 13:8 American Standard Version)

This implies if it is true( whatever it might be), fighting against is a waste of our limited time and resources on earth.

The real hope of man

The hope of the world is freedom from sin and satanic influence and a new spirit within man. Spirit transplant does not exist in the spirit world. You cannot educate a corrupted human spirit to make it better. There is but one way forward total spirit replacement, which will be followed by total body replacement all by the majestic power of our Creator!

For all creation is waiting eagerly for that future day when God will reveal who his children really are. Against its will, all creation was subjected to God’s curse. But with eager hope, the creation looks forward to the day when it will join God’s children in glorious freedom from death and decay. For we know that all creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. And we believers also groan, even though we have the Holy Spirit within us as a foretaste of future glory, for we long for our bodies to be released from sin and suffering. We, too, wait with eager hope for the day when God will give us our full rights as his adopted chi (Romans. 8:19-23 New Living Translation)

Homo spiritus from Homo sapiens

Homo spiritus does not come into existence by progressive enlightenment or evolution of our consciousness or mental sense of reality. That will make you a mental, philosophical giant, but not a spiritual man. God says Homo spiritus comes into existence by a distinct act of creation, as much as the first man, Homo sapiens came into existence by an act of creation.

..and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. (Ephesians. 4:24 New International Version)

.. and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. (Colossians. 3:10 New International Version)

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come:¹ The old has gone, the new is here! (2 Corinthians 5:17 New International Version)

Becoming Homo spiritus

What is required to free the human race from the mess it finds itself is not within human reach. This is Truth humans have struggled with over the years and still find offensive today. We imagine we can fix what is wrong with us. Well, society today compared to 100 years ago shows us that society has not yet found the magic bullet for the evils of the human heart despise the tremendous scientific advances. And to imagine that one day we will stumble upon it in the years to come is nothing short of day dreaming. Attempting to carry out further scientific research to “fix man” leaves us in the folly of repeating the same thing and expecting a different result.

We need more research for better medical treatments or tech products. Remember to give to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s. We do not need more research for the spiritual, moral and societal wellbeing of man. We need open hearts to receive the truth that has always been there for thousands of years, that God made man, sin got into man and brought man under the oppression of Satan and demonic forces; Christ came as a Man and died to shed His blood and pay the price for our sins and made it possible for man to become a new type of being.

A Jewish leader blown away by Homo spiritus

In the Gospel of John, Jesus  explained the concept of Homo spiritus to a mesmerized Jewish teacher and said,

You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You¹ must be born again.’ The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” “How can this be?” Nicodemus asked. “You are Israel’s teacher,” said Jesus, “and do you not understand these things? Very truly I tell you, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony. I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things? No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven– the Son of Man.Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.”For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever be (John. 3:7-16 New International Version).

A new life

Homo spiritus comes into existence when the first man( Homo sapiens) opens us his heart to receive God’s plan of salvation for man. And there are thousands of Homo spiritus, God’s children already on earth. As the years go by, these spiritual men are getting mature and learning more about who they are. And the earth will see the manifestation of God’s children in these last days before Christ comes back like it has never been before.

For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed. (Romans 8:19 New International Version)

The world has not seen anything yet. God is about to shake the earth through this breed of men called spiritual men.

Homo spiritus is Real

There is therefore a Homo spiritus, but not a man-made spiritual man but a newly created man by the mystery of God’s working through the work of Jesus Christ. And if any Homo sapiens wearied with the slavery of sin, the restlessness of the fearful heart uncertain of its eternal future and awaiting eternal doom in hell or the one whose heart is still seeking the truth after years of vigorous searching, Jesus speaks to this one and says,

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (Matthew. 11:28-30 New International Version)

If a man believes Christ died for his sins because of love and that God raised Him from the dead and confesses Him as Lord, He becomes saved by the working of God’s power that transcends our understanding.

If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved…” (Romans. 10:9-10 New International Version).
