The Fountain of Living Water: Finding True Life in Christ
For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.(Jeremiah 2:13, KJV)
Imagine a man stranded in a desert, dying of thirst. A fresh, flowing fountain stands before him, yet instead of drinking, he turns away and starts digging his own well in the dry, cracked ground. He labors tirelessly, but his well is broken—unable to hold water. This is the tragedy in Jeremiah 2:13. God’s people abandoned Him, the Fountain of Living Waters, and turned to empty, man-made sources that could never satisfy.
A fountain is not just a water container; it is a continuous, life-giving source that never runs dry or needs replenishing. This is how God describes Himself. He doesn’t merely give water—He is the source of all true life, joy, and spiritual sustenance. To turn from Him is to cut yourself off from the only true supply of life.
Let’s first explore the symbolism of water and then the significance of the word “living.” Water satisfies thirst. Symbolically, it represents whatever meets human needs, physically or spiritually. Humanity’s greatest need is God Himself. His presence and power are essential for life, wholeness, and joy—just as He designed us to need Him.
But this water is living, a word with deep meaning. First, it means the water itself is full of life. More importantly, it means this water gives life. In other words, the Living Water is God’s active presence, bringing renewal, vitality, and transformation.
Life includes both its essence and its expressions. Eternal life is not just a concept but a divine substance—something God imparts. It also manifests in tangible ways: healing is life, while disease is death; joy is life, while depression is death.
When God calls Himself the Fountain of Living Waters, He reveals Himself as the Source of all life and everything that flows from it—eternal life, joy, peace, protection, healing, prosperity, and every blessing found in Him.
This prophetic word in Jeremiah finds its glorious fulfillment in the New Testament when Jesus, Jehovah in the flesh, declares:
“If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.” (John 7:37-38, KJV)
Jesus not only identifies Himself as the Fountain of Living Water but extends an open invitation to all—to come and drink.
And here’s the best part: as a believer, this Fountain of Living Water is already inside you! The Holy Spirit, dwelling in you, is that ever-flowing, life-giving source. You drank from this fountain when you believed in Jesus, and now it bubbles up from your spirit—manifesting as joy, peace, healing, anointing, and glory!
Meditate
Are you drinking from the true Fountain, or have you turned to broken cisterns? What areas of your life need the refreshing waters of Jesus?
Act on the Word
Turn away from anything that cannot satisfy and seek Jesus as your source. Spend time in His presence—reading His Word, fellowshipping with His Spirit in prayer, and allowing the Holy Spirit to fill you daily.
Pray
Lord, I come to You, the Fountain of Living Waters. Fill me with Your Spirit and satisfy the thirst of my soul.
