To Every Thing There is a Season
To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven. (Ecclesiastes 3:1, KJV)
Timing is crucial: even the right thing can become the wrong thing if done at the wrong time. Life demands more than good intentions; it requires discernment to act in God’s perfect timing. By aligning ourselves with His seasons, we can avoid missteps and walk harmoniously within His plan. This devotional explores how understanding the seasons of life can provide clarity and purpose.
Ecclesiastes 3 presents a series of contrasting actions: “A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted” (v. 2, KJV). These contrasts highlight that actions are not inherently good or bad; their appropriateness depends on timing. Planting is essential in its season, just as uprooting is necessary at harvest. Likewise, there are moments to embrace and moments to refrain. The key is learning to discern the right time for each.
The children of Issachar exemplify this discernment. They “had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do” (1 Chronicles 12:32, KJV). Their ability to recognize God’s timing brought clarity and purpose to their actions. Similarly, we are called to develop a sensitivity to His seasons. Acting outside of His timing can lead to frustration—whether it’s clinging to something God is calling us to release or forcing open a door He has not yet unlocked.
As one year ends and another begins, it’s natural to pause and reflect. What season are you leaving behind? What new season is God inviting you into? The start of a new year offers a unique opportunity to realign with His purposes. Seek His guidance to discern what to release from the past year and what to pursue in the year ahead. By aligning your steps with His timing, you can enter the new year with confidence, purpose, and peace, knowing you are in the center of His will.
Meditate
Are you walking in harmony with God’s timing? Reflect on areas in your life where you may be resisting the current season or acting prematurely.
Act on the Word
Spend intentional time in prayer and reflection as the new year begins. Ask God to reveal what He wants you to release and what He is calling you to embrace. Meditate on Ecclesiastes 3 to align your actions with His perfect timing.
Pray
Lord, as I step into this new year, grant me wisdom to discern Your timing in every season. Teach me to trust Your perfect plan and walk in step with Your will. Amen.
