Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest (Joshua 1:9, KJV)
The LORD laid this scripture in my heart a long while ago. It was both an instruction and command not only for my Christian life but for the ministry He has commanded me. Walking with God requires strength and courage. Faith requires boldness.
The two phrases “be strong” and “of a good courage” are not two distinct qualities here but one and the same thing from two perspectives. Being strong in this verse is the inner ability to overcome opposition, resistance or to carry out a task. It was not referring to the physical strength of the muscles. It is easier to build muscles than to build inner strength of the heart. A strong heart is one that is bold and courageous and does not melt down in fear, opposition, or resistance.
The LORD is telling you the same thing today : be strong and of a good courage. I will repeat that if you ever dream of making it in life, especially in your faith walk, then you have to be bold and courageous. It has nothing to do with your personality type or whether you are a man or a woman. It is a divine instruction and commandment. The LORD says He is with you everywhere you go, and this is the reason why you should not be afraid or dismayed.
Take a few moments and just think over the verse above and let those words revolve around your mind again and again.
APPLY THE WORD
If you are chicken-hearted, there are dreams God has put in your heart that will never be fulfilled. God is with you, and will ensure you are victorious in everything. He only needs you to be strong and very courageous. Pay attention, and start building the muscles of your heart in God’s gym!
Ask the Spirit to help you live as bold as a lion.
